Hire KC Youth features two distinct program models during the summer: (a) Seasonal Work Experience and (b) Hosted Internships. Their characteristics are listed below.

Seasonal Work Experience Model

Description:

The Seasonal Work Experience Model is designed to provide an early work experience to youth who or may not have ever worked before, and to help youth understand how to best prepare themselves to become active and productive members of the workforce by exposing them to a workplace culture, responsibilities, and behaviors. Keys to a successful work experience program for youth are (1) intentional skill development and (2) ongoing interaction with a trained adult supervisor.

Youth Profile:

For young people with minimal to no career-connected experiences.

Core Program Components:

A high-quality work experience program integrates the following components:

  1. Youth placement in a professional work environment appropriate for a first-time employment opportunity.
  2. Opportunities for youth to engage regularly with a trained adult supervisor, who will provide direct oversight through the duration of the program.
  3. Development of necessary, but experience-appropriate, tasks valuable for both the youth and worksite.

*This model is ideal for HKCY Champions – seasonal employers who will hire young people as part of the HKCY collective.

Hosted Internship Model

Description:

The Hosted Internship Model is designed for youth with some prior work or leadership experience who are seeking career-specific workplace and professional exposure otherwise not accessible to teenagers and/or young adults. These opportunities allow interns to develop and refine 21st-century skills and engage youth in ongoing professional development workshops. The internship provides the opportunity for youth to work closely with a trained adult supervisor who will serve in an instructional role throughout the duration of the experience.

Youth Profile:

For young people at least 16 years old by June 1 (noting that opportunities for 16-17 years may be more limited), with some previous work and/or leadership experience who may have matriculated into post-secondary opportunities and achieved digital badges in job-seeking skills, financial literacy, and knowledge of workplace expectations and realities.

Core Program Components:

A high-quality internship program integrates the following components:

  1. Youth placement in an intentional experience that promotes a level of skill development that cannot be obtained from seasonal work experience.
  2. Youth placement in structured settings that connect youth to local and regional high growth industries, and to the extent possible, match youth based on identified interests and skill level.
  3. Youth participation in an orientation prior to the start of their experience and engagement in ongoing professional development workshops.
  4. Opportunities for youth to engage regularly with a trained adult supervisor who will provide direct oversight through the duration of the program.
  5. Development of more advanced and valuable tasks for both the youth and worksite.
  6. Contextual Competency- and Work-Based Learning Project: Hosted Internships through Hire KC Youth deliver a series of intentional professional development workshops that will help youth hone 21st-century skills.

*This model is ideal for HKCY Partners – employers who agree to host interns at their job site or to sponsor a hosted intern at another organization’s job site.
